5 Benefits of Boxing Fitness

The first thing some people think about when they hear the word ‘boxing’ is being punched in the face. But if you combine the words boxing and fitness together, you’ll be presented with an exercise that takes a lot of the physical pros of boxing without the risk of a body shot from a gloved opponent.

We know that we’re pretty bias but boxing fitness really is a fun way to challenge your mind and body. Not convinced? Well below we’ve listed 5 benefits that may change your mind.

1. Works your whole body

A misconception is that boxing only requires power from your shoulders or arms but the act of throwing a punch actually involves the whole body. To deliver a good punch you’ll need to use your legs to push against the ground and coordinate the rest of your body to deliver power through your strike. This involves the use of your upper and lower limbs, your shoulders and your core.

2. Improves heart health

Boxing is a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and HIIT has been associated with a decreased risk of heart disease and an increase in cardiorespiratory endurance. A healthy heart is essential for your overall health and boxing fitness is a great way to keep your ticker in good condition.

3. Improves balance

Boxing involves coordinated footwork, sharp reactive body movement and muscular strength. All of these things contribute to improving your balance. In fact, a study claims that a boxing program improved balance among stroke patients and the sport has also been used to help Parkinson’s disease patients with their balance.

4. Great for stress

As we’ve mentioned, boxing is a form of HIIT and this method of movement can help reduce stress but more noteworthy is the immediate stress relief that comes from punching a bag, a pad or even the air.

It may seem counterintuitive but hitting a target over and over again can actually make you feel happier and calmer. This is because it increases the release of our rest and digest hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, endocannabinoids, and endorphins. And who doesn’t want to be happier?

5. It improves focus

Boxing fitness is one of the few workouts that requires your undivided attention. With running, cycling or even swimming you have the ability to get lost in your own thoughts. Boxing requires you to be present. It’s a fast paced and fun exercise that leaves little room for you to think about anything else.

With continuous punching, you will find your focus is improved, increasing your ability to concentrate.
